rekey car door lock

Lost car key replacement It can cost significantly less to rekey your car door lock rather than rekeying your vehicle’s ignition. It’s a good idea to ask a professional to make you a new key for your car using the car’s door lock in order to save money. You can save even more money by removing your car’s door lock and taking it to a locksmith shop and having them make a key for you there.

You can find many vehicles that share the same key for the door lock and the ignition switch lock. In fact, many mobile locksmith companies will use the door lock as a reference in order to make the ignition key for your car.
There are many tools today that professional locksmiths use to read the car’s door lock code. The most common tool locksmiths use today is called a Lishi tool.
Many mobile locksmiths will come to your vehicle’s location and read the key information from your car door lock using the Lishi tool without removing the lock from the car door. Some locksmiths will prefer to remove your car’s door lock and read the key information that way. Either way they will use your car’s door lock to make the new ignition key.

We recommend you consider using a locksmith service

We recommend you consider using a locksmith service when making a key for your car.
Using a professional locksmith company will cost about $100 to $200. Using a locksmith company will be the most convenient way to go.

Car rekey service

You can save money by doing some of the work yourself. You can remove the car door lock and bring it into a locksmith shop.

Tip:
Before you try making an ignition key for your car by using one of your car’s door locks, you will need to confirm that your previous older key was working on both the door lock as well as the ignition lock. If not, it will be impossible to make an ignition key by using the car’s door lock as a reference.

Check if you have a chip key

Check to see if your ignition switch has an anti theft system installed, (also known as a transponder chip key system), by the manufacturer. If your ignition switch does have an anti-theft system, making a key to start your car will require a professional locksmith to come to your vehicle’s location in order to connect a diagnostic key programming machine to your vehicle’s ECU, (your car’s computer), in order to register the new key to your car. You cannot program a key to your car without your car being present.

Tip:
We recommend you always make a phone call to your local dealership and ask them if they have the key information on file. In many cases it can save you money and time if they do.
Another good thing about the dealership is that you can provide them with your car’s VIN number and get information about what type of key your car requires.

Here is how you can save some money when you lost the only key to your car:

  1. Find a local locksmith shop in your area and give them a call. Ask them if they can make you an ignition key if you bring in the car’s door lock. Make sure to provide them with your car’s make, model and year for confirmation.
  2. Find the most easy door lock on your car to disassemble. We recommend that you do not use the trunk lock or the glove box lock. Remove the door lock from your door.
  3. You can find instructions on how to remove your car’s door lock online or at the auto parts store.
  4. After you have the lock in your hand, take it to a local locksmith shop and ask them to make you a new key to your ignition using your door lock as a reference.
  5. Keep in mind that in some car’s the ignition switch lock is a bit different from the car’s door lock and it will be necessary for the locksmith to provide you anywhere from two up to ten different keys and only one of them will work on your ignition switch lock even when all of them will work on your car’s door lock.

Here is a list of vehicles that share the same key between the door lock to the ignition switch lock:

  • Acura and Honda from 1975. You can find the key code stamped on any of the locks such as the door lock, the trunk lock and yes even the glove box lock
  • Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep remove car door lock cylinder
  • Ford remove car door lock cylinder
  • Isuzu remove car door lock cylinder
  • Kia remove car door lock cylinder
  • Lexus and Toyota from 2003 and up. 90% of the time you can find the key code stamped on the passenger door lock. Lexus and Toyota door locks are very easy to dissemble by unscrewing one screw using a T25 Torx screwdriver.
  • Lincoln remove car door lock cylinder
  • Mazda remove car door lock cylinder
  • Mercury remove car door lock cylinder
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan or Infiniti remove car door lock cylinder
  • Subaru remove car door lock cylinder
  • Suzuki remove car door lock cylinder

How much does it cost to rekey a car door lock?

Using a mobile locksmith company to rekey your car door can cost anywhere between $100 to $200. A mobile locksmith company will charge additional fees such as a service call fee to travel to your car’s location.
It will cost less by doing some of the work yourself such as removing the door lock and bringing it into a locksmith shop.

Key stuck in the ignition or car door lock

Ignition lock cylinder failure symptoms

If your key won’t turn in the ignition switch lock or your car door lock, you are not alone. Ignition switch lock and car door lock failure is a very common problem between many vehicles.
Here is an example of part of an ignition switch lock or a car door lock that can cause the lock to stop working:

  • Ignition switch repair

    Ignition switch

As you can see in the picture above, this is a standard ignition switch lock with common parts that you can find on many vehicles. The ignition switch lock has parts that help to secure the lock from turning. These parts are called the lock tumbler and they are the parts that are popping out from the top of the ignition switch lock. The two brass colored strips on the side of the ignition lock are holding a part that is called the ignition sidebar.

  • Both the lock tumbler and ignition sidebar always pop out from the ignition switch lock to prevent the lock from turning.
  • Only when a key is inside the lock will those parts level up with the rest of the ignition switch lock for a perfectly smooth circular line in order to allow the ignition switch lock to turn.
  • Lock failure happens when your ignition switch lock or your car door lock has one of these two parts stuck and prevent the lock from turning.

Ignition switch or door lock, how to fix?

Ideally, the better way to fix your door lock or ignition switch lock is by replacing them completely with new locks. You can buy an ignition switch lock or a door lock at aftermarket online stores, auto parts stores, locksmith shops and at dealerships. The cost for those locks can be significantly different. To be a smart shopper it is always a good idea to shop around for those locks online. In many cases you can find differences in pricing between all these places.
Some auto repair shops such as mechanics can change those locks as well.

A convenient option is to use a mobile locksmith company. The locksmith will be able to come to your vehicle’s location which will save you time but in most cases will cost more. They can repair your ignition switch lock or your car door lock right on spot. The locksmith will have additional options to just change a few parts in the lock from actually changing the whole lock itself. That will make it possible for them to repair the lock right on spot. If you’re looking for a locksmith service it is a good idea to call a few companies to get the best price.

GM keys, how to save money:

Programming keys yourself for Buick, Chevy, Cadillac, GMC, Hummer, (only for the years 1998 until 2010).

In most cases you cannot make a GM ignition key from the car door lock, but most GM dealerships will be able to make you a key from the year 1998 until the year 2010 using your car title and your ID. What is great about GM vehicles is that in most cases you will not need to use a professional in order to program your car key even when you have no other keys.

Program GM key: (30 minute process)

  • Insert your new key into the ignition and turn it to the on position. All the dash lights should come on.
  • Do not start the engine.
  • Look for the anti-theft light. (A lock logo or a key logo or just the word theft).
  • Wait 10 minutes until the anti-theft light turns off.
  • Turn off the ignition and turn it back on so the anti-theft lights come back on for another 10 minutes but still do not start the engine.
  • You will need to have the anti-theft light come on a total of 3 times for 10 minutes, for a total of 30 minutes.
  • When the anti-theft light turns off the third time, turn off the ignition and turn it back on.
  • Now the anti-theft light should turn off after a few seconds indicating that your new key has been programmed.

Program a key copy for GM: (15 second process)

  • Insert your old programmed key and turn it to the on position. All the dash lights should come on.
  • Do not start the engine.
  • Look for the anti-theft light. (A lock logo, a key logo, or just the word theft).
  • The anti-theft light should turn off after a few seconds.
  • Turn off the ignition, remove your old key, and insert the new key.
  • Turn the ignition to the on position again. (Do not start the engine).
  • Look for the anti-theft light. (A lock logo, a key logo, or just the word theft).
  • The anti-theft light should turn off after a few seconds, indicating that your new key has been programed.

These programming instructions are for GM vehicles only and are not valid for other car makes. In fact, most other car makes will need professional programming machines/tools in order to program keys. We suggest using a locksmith or the dealership in order to program a new key. Some other car makes will have the option to program a key copy yourself, but  only when you already have two programmed and working keys. For more information on other car makes browse our website.

Who can make a Jeep Wrangler transponder/chip key?

You have come to the right spot for everything you need to know about your Jeep Wrangler key. Mile High Locksmith is a locksmith company with many locations in Colorado. With our convenient locations in Denver, Littleton, Boulder, Loveland and Colorado Springs, Colorado, we have a location near you. We have been making car keys for Jeep Wrangler for many years and would like to share some information with you that may help you in a case where you have lost the only key that you had or you already have a key and just need a spare key made.

Does your Jeep Wrangler key need to be programmed to your car?

Jeep Wrangler key replacement

Jeep Wrangler Locksmith

There is a big chance that no, your Jeep Wrangler key does not need to be programmed. Even though that in any book we have it says that your Jeep Wrangler key is a chip key and that this chip key needs to be programmed to your Jeep in order to start it, we have actually found over the years that many Jeep Wranglers do not have the transponder chip anti theft key feature installed. In simple words, most Jeep Wranglers only use a simple metal key. There are a few different ways you can find out if your Jeep Wrangler has the chip key:
Call a Jeep dealership and provide them with the vehicle’s VIN number and ask them if your Wrangler has a transponder/chip key.
If you Wrangler has a key fob, (a key with push buttons to lock and unlock the doors), than yes, your key has a chip and needs to be programmed.
Do you see an anti theft light on your dashboard? If your key is a chip/transponder key, than a theft light should show on your dashboard for a few seconds when you insert the key and turn the ignition. The theft light can also be a good indicator to let you know if your key is damaged. If you do have a key and it is not starting your Jeep, look for the theft light. If the theft light does not turn off after a few seconds when the ignition is in the ON position, then your key is damaged or not programmed.
What color is the plastic on your key head? If your key has black plastic on the key head or no plastic at all, than the key has no chip. If your key has a gray color plastic on the key head than your key has a chip. Keep in mind that the colors of the key will be only 90% accurate.

Who can make a Jeep Wrangler transponder/chip key?

Making a key for Jeep Wrangler

There are two places you should check prices and services at to get a new key made:
The first place is at a Jeep dealership. The dealership will be able to make you a key by the VIN number. However, you will need to tow your Jeep to them as well as provide proof of ownership.
The second place to check is an automotive locksmith company. With a locksmith company you will have the options to either tow your Wrangler to them or use their mobile locksmith service. Most locksmiths will charge an additional trip charge/service call to drive to your Jeep’s location.

If your Jeep has just a simple key and does not require a chip/transponder key and you have lost the key, where can you get a replacement key made?

Both a Jeep dealership and a locksmith store will be able to make you a replacement key. Even when it is not necessary to come to your Jeep’s location in order to make a replacement key, a mobile locksmith will travel to you for an additional service call fee. If you lost the only key you had and your Jeep Wrangler does not have the chip key system installed, the locksmith or the dealer will require only proof of ownership without your Jeep physically being there in order to make you a new replacement key.

Honda Key

Mile High Locksmith is an automotive locksmith company. Here we have answered some questions that are commonly asked about Honda Civic keys. After making Honda Civic keys for many years we would like to share with you some useful information about what you can do when you lose your key and have no spare, where you make a key replacement or key copy, as well as what type of key your Honda Civic requires.

Honda Civic key replacement cost

Honda Civic keys have changed over the years. To get the best quote on a key replacement, we recommend you shop around between locksmith companies and your local Honda dealership. However, before you start to call around, make sure you have this information handy:

  • Your Honda Civic’s year
  • Did your old Honda key work on all the locks? (All the door locks and the ignition lock)

Questions to ask – What is the total cost?

(Starting from the year 2001, a programming machine will need to be connected to your car’s computer, also known as an ECU, in order to program the key)

  • If your Honda key needs to be programmed, the dealership will ask you to tow the car in, where as a locksmith will add a service call charge to come to you.
  • What will the cost be to cut and program the key?
  • If the quote is for a key with the push buttons on it or if it is just a quote for a key without the push buttons. For the later years it can be that you will receive quotes for a transponder chip key without the push button on it so you will need to ask the dealership or locksmith to be specific.

Cutting a Honda Civic key:

We would like to point out one important thing you should consider when you are looking for a professional to cut your Honda key for you:
Cutting a Honda key between the years 2003 to 2017 will require a high security key machine and we recommend you make sure you only use an experienced professional locksmith company or Honda dealership to cut these keys and this is why:

  • When a high security Honda key is not cut correctly it can damage your door lock or ignition lock when you use the key. We always recommend you try your new key on one of the locks you do not use often.
  • For many years it is know that Honda has a common problem on the vehicle’s locks and ignitions and has had recalls on them.
  • What happen is that the key blade itself is stronger from the parts, (wafers), inside the lock and it can damage the lock or ignition each time you insert the key into the lock.
  • To avoid the damage make sure your key blade has been cut perfectly by a professional.
  • We recommend you only use a locksmith company or a dealership to cut these keys.

  • Honda Civics from the years 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 will have just a simple metal key that locks and unlocks the doors, trunk and turns on and off the ignition. No key programming is needed for these years unlike with transponder keys or chip keys in the later years that do need to be programed.
  • For the later years programming a transponder chip key is required in order to have the car start. This includes the years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. From the year 2003 and up a high security key blade will be required.
  • A key fob with push buttons to lock and unlock the doors is an extra feature for the years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Keep in mind that for these specific years the remote on the key is optional
  • A key fob or push to start key (smart key), is for the years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Where can I buy Honda Civic keys?

You can by Honda keys almost anywhere including at a Honda dealership, on online stores such as Amazon, Ebay, Ikeyless and Keylessride and many other stores that sell car keys. Ace Hardware also sells these keys as well as locksmith shops. What we recommend you do is to check the quality of the key. When you buy a Honda Civic key that is not from a Honda dealership you may end up buying an aftermarket key. An aftermarket key can be a used key where the insides of the key are used parts and the outside of the key shell has been replaced with a new one. This will make it look like you have purchased a brand new key. Since aftermarket keys can be used keys, they normally cost much less than a new key and can have problems functioning right away or after a short time of use. An aftermarket key can still be a good key and can hold for many years just as a brand new key would. However, we believe you should take the risk into consideration when you are buying any aftermarket keys.

Honda Key
2016 2017 Honda Civic key

Honda Civic key code

One of our favorite types of vehicles to make a key by code for is Honda. From 1972 until 2017, Honda stamps the key code on all of the locks on the vehicle. The key code can be used as a reference to cut the key blade. The key code is not made for programming the key.
If you lose the key to your Honda, you have the option to remove one of the locks from your car such as the trunk lock, door lock, glove box lock or ignition lock. After you have the lock in your hand you can take it to a local automotive locksmith shop and have them cut you a new key by using the key code that is stamped on the lock itself. This can save you money in the end.

Same key for all door locks

Why should you rekey your door locks after closing?

It is a very common thing for people to hire a contractor to improve their home before they put it on the market. These contractors in many cases will need access to the home even when the home is vacant to finish their work. The contractors do not always return the keys and who knows if one of the employees did not make a key copy. Maybe the previous owner’s roommate, spouse or kids still have a key to your newly purchased home. It is always better to be safe and change the keys when you move in just to keep a peace of mind knowing that no one has your house keys.

Rekey vs new locks

How much does it cost to rekey a house and will changing locks on a house cost more?

Rekeying your house doors using a locksmith service can cost anywhere from $10 to $30 for each lock, plus a locksmith service call fee and labor fee. We recommend you consider buying new locks and this is why. If you have locks from the manufacturers Schlage, Kwikset, Defiant or Emtek on your doors, you can buy the same manufacturer’s locks in a 4 pack of locks. These locks are already keyed to the same key and cost about $30 to $60 for each pack depending on the manufacturer. This option will let you change your locks from old locks to new locks, allow you to change the color of the locks, come with a manufacturer warranty and will  have the latest technology for locks on the market. You can buy the locks from the  manufacturers Schlage, Kwikset, Defiant or Emtek at most of the hardware stores such as The Home Depot or Lowes, order them online from websites such as Amazon or Ebay, as well as buy them at your neighborhood locksmith shop. For more information on buying new locks visit our page Cheapest way to rekey locks. The lock manufacturers Schlage, Kwikset, Defiant and Emtek make these locks easy to install using their installation guides. The packages of locks will always have a small instruction book attached and all you will need are a few very simple tools  for the installation. These manufacturers also have full support if you have any questions on how to install them. You do not need to be a professional locksmith in order to install these locks.

Latest technology door locks

After you close on a new home, it is a good idea to look into the latest technology for door locks. A lot has changed. Most locksmiths and realtors will suggest that you rekey your locks after closing but we recommend you look into keypad locks, keyless locks, bluetooth locks from Schlage locks, Kwikset locks or keypad WIFI locks from LockState.

When should I consider hiring a locksmith?

  • When you just want to rekey the existing locks on your doors.
  • If you have more difficult locks to work on such as French door locks.

What is the difference between a WIFI door lock to any other smart lock on the market?

Mile High Locksmith is a locksmith company located in Colorado. We have been working with locks and keys for many years, installing access control door locks, keypad locks and high security locks. After many years, we can safely say that we have become experts on door locks and would like to introduce to you the new generation of WIFI door locks that are made by LockState.

What is the difference between a WIFI door lock to any other smart lock on the market?

There are many differences between these two types of locks. The difference we would like to point out is the WIFI door lock is a lock that connects to a WIFI internet connection in your home or office. It connects exactly in the same way you would connect your phone, tablet or computer. By having this feature on your door lock, it gives you the ability to access your lock online from anywhere around the world just as if you were standing by your door and using a traditional key. WIFI door locks are the future for humanity to lock and unlock doors.

Extra features for WIFI door locks

A peace of mind. You can set the WIFI door lock to provide you with alerts anytime someone is using a code to unlock your door. For example, you are running late at work and you ask your dog walker to take your dog out for a walk. You can access your lock online, set up a temporary code and provide it to your dog walker. They can then use the code on the WIFI door lock keypad and unlock the door. At the same time they are unlocking the door, you will receive an email alert letting you know that the dog walker has unlocked your door. You will receive the same alert when the dog walker is done and uses the code to lock the door when they leave. Then you can delete this code to make sure the dog walker will not have access to your home anymore. With a WIFI door lock, you can make new codes and delete codes anytime and anywhere using your computer or phone.

Rental property management

If you are a house owner who rents out your home, condo or apartment building manager, the WIFI door lock is perfect for you. No more need to rekey your locks or change your door locks when your tenants move out. If you have a roommate or just rent a room, when your roommate moves out, you will not need to hire a locksmith to rekey your locks. As the owner of your own personal WIFI door lock, you do not need to provide keys to your tenants or roommates. You can just provide them with a key code to lock and unlock the door by using the keypad. Then you can change these codes anytime and from anywhere by using you username and password online.

Is a WIFI door lock good for businesses?

Yes. In fact, most businesses save thousands of dollars by using WIFI door locks and not the traditional access control locks. The first feature we would like to point out to you is no more wires. The traditional access door locks have been installed on business doors for many years by using the prototype system. For example, the old access control locks require sending wires from the lock to the front desk that connect to a buzzer or computer. Drilling walls, having an

electrician come to you, filing for a permit from the city, and then you will need a locksmith to install the locks for you. These are all the requirements that are needed when you use a prototype access control system. This can translate into a much higher bill at the end of the day. With the WIFI door lock, all you need to do is have a locksmith install the lock on your door, download the app to your phone and you are done. With the WIFI door lock, you can track who unlocks and locks the locks by date and time and even provide temporary codes to temporary contractors working in your building.

Mile High Locksmith sells and installs WIFI door locks, also known as remote locks, from LockState. With our convenient stores in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Loveland, we can easily come to your location and install the WIFI door locks for you on your home or business. For more information you can give us a call at 720-248-8087 or send an email to milehighlocksmith@gmail.com. We provide free on-site estimates, no service call or any other fees will apply until the work is done.

Best security lock for wooden front door?

If you are the owner of a house or a condo or if you are living in an apartment, using a key to lock and unlock your door may not be your best option. Of course the opinion on this will change depending on who you ask.

There are two leading manufacture lock companies in the United States. These companies are Schlage and Kwikset. It is safe to say that you can find Schlage locks or Kwikset locks, or even locks with a different brand name but still owned by one of those two companies, on about 70% of homes in the country.

The difference between Schlage locks and Kwikset locks is the quality of the locks, (how many years the lock will work on your door), as well as the design of the lock. There is a very small difference in the level of security, but as far as security goes most Schlage locks or Kwikset locks really share the same type of security level.

This key code has nothing to do with programming your key to your car. To get the key code all you really need is a T25 Torx Screwdriver in order to release the screw from the passenger door lock. If the passenger door does not have a lock, use the driver side door.

Push to start

Toyota key replacement

First, you cannot replace the key, program the key, or key copy your Toyota Prius smart key yourself. For any of these services, you will need to contact either an automotive locksmith company with the right equipment to program proximity smart key systems, or contact a Toyota dealership.

Your Toyota Prius smart key has two parts. The first part is the fob itself, or in professional terms, you can call it a proximity key fob. The second part is the emergency key, (smart key insert), that been created to only unlock the door in a case the push buttons on the key will not work.

Program Toyota smart key fob

Your Toyota anti theft system is built in a way that if you have an existing key and you would like to just add a key you will be able to add up to four keys in the system. If you lost the key and have no spare key, in order to program a new key replacement, the locksmith or the dealership will need to erase all of the keys from the anti theft system memory and program the new key with a different code. By doing that your new key will become the master key for the car.

Rekey car locks

In a case you would like to change the keys for your Toyota Prius, all you really need to do is erase all of the keys from the anti theft system memory and reprogram either your existing key or a new key to your car. By doing that the key will receive a different code and any key that was not reprogramed will no longer work.
Before you replace your key or make a key copy you will need to know that from 2010 to 2016 Toyota has made four different types of keys for Toyota Prius.

Key insert

The key insert has no chip and will not require any programming. In order to cut the key, you will need to contact either a Toyota dealership or an automotive locksmith company with a high security key cutting machine. For an example you can watch our video we have shared.

The key fobs we are talking about here are fobs between the years 2001 and 2008 with the push buttons to lock and unlock the doors and that also has the red panic button. The types of Lexus we repair key fobs for are ES300, ES330, GS400, GS430, GX470, IS300, IS350, LS400, LS430, LX470, RX300 and RX330. Lexus has been making these keys for many years and often times they fail.
In fact, we have seen so many of these keys break, that we would like to share with you this information about how to repair the key at a low cost.

Replace Lexus key shell

You can buy a Lexus key shell for just a few dollars online. These shells have been made for many types of Lexus. Whether you have more or less buttons on your key fob, Lexus makes shells for both. You cannot just buy the right shell for your Lexus and fix it yourself. The reason is because the blade is attached to the shell permanently and you will have to have the high security blade cut by a professional. The only part that you can replace yourself will be the inside part.

So obviously, the part you are replacing between the broken key fob to the new key shell is the inside part with the push buttons. This part has a chip and is what makes your car start, so be very careful with it.

Lexus key broken car wont start

If your Lexus key fob broke there is a way to fix it at a lower cost from actually replacing the whole key itself. Let us break it down for you:

Let’s separate the Lexus key fob into two parts. The first part will be the plastic cover including the key blade that goes inside the ignition. The second part will be the inside of the key which is the electronic chip with the push buttons. Which part is the most important?

The most important part of your Lexus key will be the inside part, the electronic chip with the push buttons. An easy fix for your key will be to purchase a Lexus key shell and have a locksmith cut copy your new Lexus key shell from your old key and simply replace the electronic chip from your old key to your new Lexus key shell.

When you fix your key by replacing the broken key shell with a new key shell, you are basically taking your existing electronic chip that is already programed to your car and installing it in your new key shell. This means that besides cutting the key, you do not need to do anything else.

Lexus key cutting

Your Lexus key, in professional terms, is called a High Security key. Not just any locksmith can cut this key for you. Only locksmiths that have specific machines for High Security car keys can cut these keys. As you can see in the video, this cutting machine points a laser to a key in order to cut the key from the inside out. That is what makes this key a High Security key.

As you can see in the picture, this key is a transponder chip key. This key is clear and lets you see how it looks inside. There is no battery, no push buttons, and normally you cannot see the parts inside the key because it is covered with grey or black plastic. As you can see in the blue square, it is just part of the key blade. The red square shows the electronic chip that actually operates more like an antenna.

Does my car key have a chip?

If you are asking this question, then most likely the answer is yes. Starting in 1997 many car makers started installing security systems in their vehicles that require a car key with an electronic chip inside. This chip does not require any electricity and does not power up with a battery. Even if you do have a battery inside your car key, the battery has nothing to do with your car key security chip, which is also called a transponder key or anti theft system.
We have seen all kinds of different videos and posts online that explain to you how to bypass the security system between your key and your car. We have also seen videos and posts that tell you how to transfer electronic chips between keys. We want to ask all of them why they would want to do that! For most cars, from 1997 to 2010, a brand new, shiny key that just came out of the oven, normally costs just a few dollars. The dealership or a locksmith will charge you only a few dollars for the key, and most of the cost will be for labor, cutting and programming the key. So it really doesn’t make any sense to do all the work they talk about in the videos and posts found online just for a key that is worth only a few dollars. You could end up spending more than this if you end up damaging your vehicle. We have actually seen customers who take out their whole ignition, buy and install a new one and end up damaging it and then they call us to come help them fix it all. They end up spending two to three times more than what they would have spent to begin with. We highly recommend you call a locksmith or a dealership and ask them to make you a new key to your car, and ask them what it will cost. We also encourage you to shop around for the best price.

Is my car key chipped?

The vehicles that might not have a chipped key are Chevy pickup trucks, possibly other pickup trucks, Saturn, Kia, Hyundai, Isuzu, possibly Chevy sedans, GMC, Toyota Corolla and Camry. But again, having a chip in the key, since 1998, is an extra feature. So it is a possibility that if your vehicle was made after 1998, your car or truck key is chipped. We give it about an 80% chance.

Here is a list of vehicle manufacturers that install anti theft systems in vehicles from the year 1998 and up:

Acura, Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, SAAB, Scion, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.

What is this chip?

This chip has nothing to do with your car’s door locks or your car alarm, (also know as a keyless entry). In fact, most people don’t even know that this chip exists until they lose their car key.
