Lost Cadillac Eldorado keys
What will be the cost to make a new key for my Cadillac Eldorado?
Mile High Locksmith™ is an expert automotive locksmith company. For many years we have been repairing locks and keys for Cadillac Eldorados. Over the years we have found some common questions that our customers ask, and we would like to answer the questions here. The most commonly asked questions are where can I get a new key made or a spare key made? Does my Cadillac Eldorado have a chip inside the key, (also known as a transponder key)? Does my key need to be programmed to my car? Where and how can I repair my ignition and door locks?
Did you know that from 1970 to 2003 you can find key information on your ignition lock? By disassembling your ignition lock, you can find in about 90% of the Cadillac Eldorados, the key code stamp on the lock. You can provide this key code to any locksmith and he can cut you a new key from it.
When you have lost your key to your Cadillac Eldorado the most convenient way to get a new key replacement will be with an automotive locksmith company. The locksmith will be able to make a new key either by using your car’s key code or VIN number. Some locksmiths will have additional tools to actually read the lock itself. Your Cadillac Eldorado is supposed to have the same key working on all the locks such as the door, glove box, trunk and ignition lock. If for some reason your Cadillac Eldorado has different keys to the doors and ignition, this means that one of the locks have been changed and making you a new key will become more difficult. It will eliminate the convenient way of making a new key by your car’s VIN number.
The cost to make a Cadillac Eldorado key will be determined by your local locksmith company. We do recommend you to shop around for prices.
Before you get a price, we can provide you with some information about your Cadillac Eldorado’s type of key and what will cost more and what will cost less.
The keys have changed over the years for your Cadillac Eldorado. Below we will share the type of key by the year:
- If your Cadillac Eldorado was made in the years 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, or, 1987 then you have just a regular old fashioned key. If you just need a key copy you can get it at a locksmith store or hardware store. One of the hardware stores we recommend is Ace Hardware. If you lost the key and need a new one made, making a new key will be difficult and most likely the locksmith will need to disassemble one of the locks to get the key information. This will require additional labor cost on the job. Some locksmiths will have special tools to actually read the lock without disassembling it. This locksmith will be able to charge you less.
- If your Cadillac Eldorado was made in the years 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, or 1997, then your key has additional security that is called a VAT key system. These keys do not need to be programed to your car and basically will be just a regular key. The difference in this key is that it has a small piece of metal on it with different VAT numbers. You can only have one VAT number on your key. A locksmith, besides cutting your key, will need to determine which VAT number it is. This will cost more and will add anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes of extra labor for the locksmith.
- If your Cadillac Eldorado was made in the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, or 2003, then making a new key replacement should be easier from all the other years. The locksmith will be able to run a VIN number and from that they will receive the information for what VAT key number your Cadillac Eldorado requires, as well as what the key cuts are. For this service the locksmith will not need to program the key or even come to your vehicle at all. You can simply just provide the locksmith with proof of ownership to your vehicle and your vehicle’s VIN number and the locksmith will be able to make you a new key at his shop.
Replace ignition switch on the Cadillac Eldorado
We do not encourage you to replace your ignition switch at all since your Cadillac Eldorado has the same key to all the locks. If your ignition switch stops turning or the key is getting stuck, a professional locksmith will be able to rekey this lock for you at a low cost, or even find the key code that is stamped on the ignition lock and cut you a new key from that. If you are looking to replace your ignition switch, we recommend you to first take the existing ignition lock to a locksmith shop and have them either rekey it or make a key for it.
