Ford Focus key replacement

In order to know what type of key your Ford Focus requires, you will need to know your Focus year. Over the years, Ford has changed the keys for the Ford Focus. Below we will list for you the type of keys the Ford Focus has by the year.

If your Ford Focus was made in the years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010, then you have just a regular transponder chip key.
If your Ford Focus was made in the year 2011, then you can have two different types of keys. You can have either just a regular transponder chip key or a key fob remote combo.
If your Ford Focus was made in the years 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016 then you have a key fob remote combo.
For Ford Focus from 2000 to 2016 you have an electronic chip hidden inside the key head. These keys have to be programed to your sedan’s immobilizer. If you lost the key you will not be able to program these keys yourself. You will need a professional to program it for you. If you just need a duplicate key, please read the paragraph called, “Ford Focus Key Programming.” If you lost the key, you can have these keys made and programed at a couple of places. The first one, and most convenient, will be with an automotive locksmith. The second will be at a Ford dealership. We recommend you to shop around for prices and the type of service they do.
Ford Focus key programming
As a part of the security for the Ford Focus, Ford is giving you the option to program a duplicate key yourself. However, you will have to have two working keys already, and one new key you want to program, to be able to program the key without any expensive machines. If you do not have two working keys already, you will need to use a professional to program a key.

If you do have two working keys and you do want to program a third working key, this is how:

At first you will need to purchase a new key and have the key cut to your car. You can buy these keys at many stores online. After you receive the new key you just bought you can simply take the new key and one of your existing keys to a hardware store or a locksmith shop and ask them to copy your old key to the new key. One of the hardware stores we recommend you try is Ace Hardware. You can also buy these keys at a locksmith company or Ford dealership. After you cut your new key take your two old keys, and the new key you have just made, (a total of 3 keys,) to your Ford Focus and follow these steps to program your new key:

Insert one of your old working keys into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition to the on position and back off again.
Remove the key and, within five seconds, insert your second old key and turn it to the one position and back off again.
Insert your new key that you have just made, and in less than ten seconds turn it to the on position. Leave it on for one second and turn your ignition switch back off.
After you turn off the ignition switch you will see the security light light up for about three seconds to tell you that your car has entered the programming mode for your new key.
Now you will need to leave your key untouched for a minimum of 10 minutes. Do not attempt to start the car and leave the key in the on position.
If for some reason you turn the key, start the car, or even take the key out, you will cancel the programming mode. Then in order to program the key you will need to restart the whole process again.

Ford Focus key wont come out of ignition
The Ford Focus has been known to have a problem with the ignition. If your key got stuck in the ignition, or your ignition lock simply just stopped working, we believe that most likely your ignition cylinder will need to be replaced. However, we encourage you to first try and make a new key, either by the VIN number or key code, but not a key copy. If that doesn’t work, you will either need to rekey or change your ignition lock. A locksmith company or Ford dealership will be able to do this type of work for you.
