Ford Expedition SUV key replacement

Every year of the Ford Expedition has an electronic chip hidden inside the keyhead. This key is a part of the SUV security system, that is also known as the anti theft security system. In simple words, besides turning the key to start the engine, your key has an electronic chip that has a wireless connection with your SUV. These keys are also known as transponder chip keys.
Below, we will share a list with you on what kind of key your Ford Expedition has by the year.

If your Ford Expedition was made in the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010, then you have just a standard transponder key. You can have this key made by a locksmith company or Ford dealership.
If your Ford Expedition was made in the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 or 2016 then you may have a remote keyhead, also know as an 80 BIT iPATS keyfob. A Ford dealership or a mobile locksmith will be able to make these keys for you.
What is the difference of making a key at a Ford dealership or with locksmith? The difference will be the cost and type of service. The Ford dealership will ask you to bring your Ford Expedition in, when a locksmith will be able to make you a key at your SUV’s location. We always recommend you to shop around for prices between the two.

Ford Expedition key stuck in ignition

We have been repairing ignition switches and locks for Ford Expedition’s for many years. The most common reason why your key will get stuck in the ignition is:

Your key is worn out. Even if your key looks fine and has just a small modification to it, that can be just enough to make the key stop working or get stuck. What we recommend you to do is to make a new key by your SUV VIN number or key code. A Ford dealership or a mobile locksmith will be able to make you a new key.
The second reason is a part in your Ford Expedition’s ignition is stuck. We recommend you have a mobile locksmith rekey the ignition.
How to program a keyless entry remote for a Ford Expedition

From 1997 to 2010 you can buy a separate remote to your Ford Expedition. You can buy these remotes online, through a locksmith or at a Ford dealership. These remotes come with instructions on how to program them yourself.

How to program a Ford Expedition key yourself

Only for the years 1997 and 1998:
You can buy a key blank online and take it to a locksmith shop. If you ask, they can cut it for you. Then you can just take the cut key to your SUV and program it yourself. This is how:

Insert your newly cut key into your ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON, or run position. The security light on the dashboard will flash for about fifteen minutes.
When the security light stops flashing, you need to do the second step within five minutes. Turn the ignition cylinder to the OFF position, and then back to the ON, or run position. The security light on the dash will flash for about fifteen more minutes.
When the security light stops flashing, you again have about five minutes to start the third step. Turn the ignition cylinder to the OFF position and then back to the ON, or run position one more time. The security light on the dash will flash for about fifteen more minutes.
After the security light stops flashing for the third time, your new key has been programmed into your vehicle’s computer and will run the car. It has replaced all the electronic key codes from before and is the ONLY key that is programmed into the vehicle’s computer.

Ford Expedition Keys 1999-2010

We recommend you always have 3 working keys to your Ford Expedition and this is why: (will only work for Ford Expedition between the years 1999-2010)
If you have 2 keys as spares and one key that you use for your SUV most of the time, then in a case you lose the key or your key breaks, you can save some money by programming a third new key yourself.

As part of the Ford Expedition security key system, Ford asks you to have 2 working programed keys to be able to program a third key without using any expensive machines.

If you have two working keys, you can order a new transponder key blank online. Some websites we recommend you to buy transponder key blanks from are: Ebay.com, Amazon.com, and Ikeyless.com. You can order these keys yourself and take the new key blank you have just purchased, with one of your old working keys, to a locksmith shop or a hardware store and ask them to copy the key for you. One of the hardware stores we recommend is Ace Hardware.

After you get your third key copy made, this is how you can program it to you SUV yourself. (will only work for Ford Expedition between the years 1999-2010)

Insert one of your old keys into the ignition.
Turn the ignition to the run position. Keep the ignition in the run position for at least 3 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds. Then, turn the ignition off and remove the key.
Repeat the same steps with your second old working key as you did with your first old working key.
Within 20 seconds after you have removed your second old key, insert your newly copied key. Turn the ignition to the run position and leave it for at least 6 seconds. Your new key will now be programmed to your vehicle.
