Move-in rekey: what we normally do on-site

1. We start with the doors you actually use

You show us the doors you want done and what your goal is (cancel old keys, simplify to one key, add keyless access on the main door, etc.).

2. We rekey the existing locks

We rekey your current lock cylinders so the old keys are canceled and only the new keys we provide will work.

3. We cut new keys and a few copies

Most move-ins need multiple keys right away. We cut the new keys and make a few duplicates during the visit.

4. Optional: add keyless entry on the main door

If you want a lock with code / fingerprint / camera / WiFi / Bluetooth access, we typically install it on the main door (or a commonly used side entry) and fit it to the existing door. If needed, we also align the rest of the standard keyed locks so your setup stays practical day-to-day.

House move-in checklist (residential)

House move-in checklist (residential)

For a house / residential move-in, these are the doors people most often include:

  • Front door
  • Back door
  • Garage door
  • Side doors

Common goal: one key for the exterior doors

A lot of homeowners want one simple key that works for the main exterior doors. If your lock types allow it, we can set that up during the same visit.

Modern front door with keyed deadbolt and handle set, commonly rekeyed in residential homes.

Mortise lock installed on an aluminum-framed glass door, featuring a key inserted into the lock and a sliding mechanism for enhanced security—commonly used in commercial properties.

Business move-in checklist (commercial)

For commercial properties and businesses, move-in rekeying usually focuses on the doors that control real access:

  • Glass front door lock
  • Back door
  • Exit device lock

Typical goal: reset access after turnover

When keys have changed hands (staff changes, tenant turnover, contractors), rekeying resets access so old keys stop working and you control who gets copies moving forward.

Keyless upgrades during a move-in rekey

If you want to modernize access while you’re already doing a rekey, we commonly install a lock with features like:

  • Code / keypad
  • Fingerprint
  • Camera
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth access

We typically install it on the main entry (or a frequently used side entry), fit it to the existing door, and-if needed-match it with the rest of your standard keyed locks so you’re not stuck with a messy mix.

Questions people usually ask after moving in

I just moved in – can you rekey my front door?

Yes. We rekey the front door on-site so old keys stop working, then cut new keys and a few copies during the same visit.

Can you rekey the front door, back door, and garage door at the same time?

Yes. That’s the most common move-in setup for a house (residential). We rekey the doors you use every day and set them up the way you want.

I’m moving into a new business – can you change the keys on the glass front door?

Yes. Rekeying the glass front door is usually the first step for commercial businesses moving into a new space.

Can you also rekey the back door and the exit device lock?

Yes. A typical business move-in includes the glass front door, the back door, and the exit device lock – all handled in one visit.

After moving in, can I add a keypad lock instead of using only keys?

Yes. During a move-in rekey, we often install a keypad, fingerprint, or smart lock on the main door and keep the rest of the doors working with standard keys.
