Toyota key code lookup

You do not need to contact anyone really to get your Toyota Prius key code. The key code has no use beside just providing you with the information for cutting the key blade. This key code has nothing to do with programming your key to your car. To get the key code all you really need is a T25 Torx Screwdriver in order to release the screw from the passenger door lock. If the passenger door does not have a lock, use the driver side door.

Mile High Locksmith is an expert automotive locksmith company located in Denver, Colorado. We have been working on Toyota locks and keys for many years and would like to share some useful information about Toyota Prius smart keys.

If you just need a key copy, or if you lost the key and need a new key replacement, or if you’re not sure who has your key and you would like to rekey your car, here are your options:

Push to start

Toyota key replacement

First, you cannot replace the key, program the key, or key copy your Toyota Prius smart key yourself. For any of these services, you will need to contact either an automotive locksmith company with the right equipment to program proximity smart key systems, or contact a Toyota dealership.

Your Toyota Prius smart key has two parts. The first part is the fob itself, or in professional terms, you can call it a proximity key fob. The second part is the emergency key, (smart key insert), that been created to only unlock the door in a case the push buttons on the key will not work.

Program Toyota smart key fob

Your Toyota anti theft system is built in a way that if you have an existing key and you would like to just add a key you will be able to add up to four keys in the system. If you lost the key and have no spare key, in order to program a new key replacement, the locksmith or the dealership will need to erase all of the keys from the anti theft system memory and program the new key with a different code. By doing that your new key will become the master key for the car.

Rekey car locks

In a case you would like to change the keys for your Toyota Prius, all you really need to do is erase all of the keys from the anti theft system memory and reprogram either your existing key or a new key to your car. By doing that the key will receive a different code and any key that was not reprogramed will no longer work.
Before you replace your key or make a key copy you will need to know that from 2010 to 2016 Toyota has made four different types of keys for Toyota Prius.

Key insert

The key insert has no chip and will not require any programming. In order to cut the key, you will need to contact either a Toyota dealership or an automotive locksmith company with a high security key cutting machine. For an example you can watch our video we have shared.

The key fobs we are talking about here are fobs between the years 2001 and 2008 with the push buttons to lock and unlock the doors and that also has the red panic button. The types of Lexus we repair key fobs for are ES300, ES330, GS400, GS430, GX470, IS300, IS350, LS400, LS430, LX470, RX300 and RX330. Lexus has been making these keys for many years and often times they fail.
In fact, we have seen so many of these keys break, that we would like to share with you this information about how to repair the key at a low cost.

Replace Lexus key shell

You can buy a Lexus key shell for just a few dollars online. These shells have been made for many types of Lexus. Whether you have more or less buttons on your key fob, Lexus makes shells for both. You cannot just buy the right shell for your Lexus and fix it yourself. The reason is because the blade is attached to the shell permanently and you will have to have the high security blade cut by a professional. The only part that you can replace yourself will be the inside part.

So obviously, the part you are replacing between the broken key fob to the new key shell is the inside part with the push buttons. This part has a chip and is what makes your car start, so be very careful with it.

If your Lexus key fob broke there is a way to fix it at a lower cost from actually replacing the whole key itself. Let us break it down for you:

Let’s separate the Lexus key fob into two parts. The first part will be the plastic cover including the key blade that goes inside the ignition. The second part will be the inside of the key which is the electronic chip with the push buttons. Which part is the most important?

The most important part of your Lexus key will be the inside part, the electronic chip with the push buttons. An easy fix for your key will be to purchase a Lexus key shell and have a locksmith cut copy your new Lexus key shell from your old key and simply replace the electronic chip from your old key to your new Lexus key shell.

When you fix your key by replacing the broken key shell with a new key shell, you are basically taking your existing electronic chip that is already programed to your car and installing it in your new key shell. This means that besides cutting the key, you do not need to do anything else.

Lexus key cutting

Your Lexus key, in professional terms, is called a High Security key. Not just any locksmith can cut this key for you. Only locksmiths that have specific machines for High Security car keys can cut these keys. As you can see in the video, this cutting machine points a laser to a key in order to cut the key from the inside out. That is what makes this key a High Security key.

Transponder chip key

As you can see in the picture, this key is a transponder chip key. This key is clear and lets you see how it looks inside. There is no battery, no push buttons, and normally you cannot see the parts inside the key because it is covered with grey or black plastic. As you can see in the blue square, it is just part of the key blade. The red square shows the electronic chip that actually operates more like an antenna.

Does my car key have a chip?

If you are asking this question, then most likely the answer is yes. Starting in 1997 many car makers started installing security systems in their vehicles that require a car key with an electronic chip inside. This chip does not require any electricity and does not power up with a battery. Even if you do have a battery inside your car key, the battery has nothing to do with your car key security chip, which is also called a transponder key or anti theft system.
We have seen all kinds of different videos and posts online that explain to you how to bypass the security system between your key and your car. We have also seen videos and posts that tell you how to transfer electronic chips between keys. We want to ask all of them why they would want to do that! For most cars, from 1997 to 2010, a brand new, shiny key that just came out of the oven, normally costs just a few dollars. The dealership or a locksmith will charge you only a few dollars for the key, and most of the cost will be for labor, cutting and programming the key. So it really doesn’t make any sense to do all the work they talk about in the videos and posts found online just for a key that is worth only a few dollars. You could end up spending more than this if you end up damaging your vehicle. We have actually seen customers who take out their whole ignition, buy and install a new one and end up damaging it and then they call us to come help them fix it all. They end up spending two to three times more than what they would have spent to begin with. We highly recommend you call a locksmith or a dealership and ask them to make you a new key to your car, and ask them what it will cost. We also encourage you to shop around for the best price.

Is my car key chipped?

The vehicles that might not have a chipped key are Chevy pickup trucks, possibly other pickup trucks, Saturn, Kia, Hyundai, Isuzu, possibly Chevy sedans, GMC, Toyota Corolla and Camry. But again, having a chip in the key, since 1998, is an extra feature. So it is a possibility that if your vehicle was made after 1998, your car or truck key is chipped. We give it about an 80% chance.

Here is a list of vehicle manufacturers that install anti theft systems in vehicles from the year 1998 and up:

Acura, Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, SAAB, Scion, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.

What is this chip?

This chip has nothing to do with your car’s door locks or your car alarm, (also know as a keyless entry). In fact, most people don’t even know that this chip exists until they lose their car key.
