Jeep Grand Cherokee key replacement

Key Replacement

How do you make a spare key for your Jeep Grand Cherokee? Where can you buy and program Jeep Grand Cherokee key fobs? Why did your Jeep Grand Cherokee ignition switch stop turning and how can you get it fixed? What should you do if the actual key is broken? Mile High Locksmith is an expert Jeep Grand Cherokee locksmith company located in Colorado at four convenient locations. We have shops in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Loveland. We would like to share some information with you about Jeep Grand Cherokee lock and key services, as well as some other pieces of general information.

Jeep Grand Cherokee key fobs

Jeep Grand Cherokees that were made between the years 1998 and 2004 will have a key fob remote that is separate from the key itself. These key fobs are relatively inexpensive and are usually between $30 and $60. They can be found to purchase on many websites online and some of the websites we recommend include, ebay.com, amazon.com, ikeyless.com and keylessride.com. To program this fob, you will either need the help of an automotive locksmith or a Jeep dealership. You will not be able to program it yourself.

Jeep Grand Cherokees from the years 2005 to 2007 have a key fob remote that comes as one unit with the key. To program these key fobs, you will have to use an automotive locksmith or Jeep dealership as well. The cost between a locksmith company and dealership are usually different. The prices cannot be matched. The reason the prices cannot be matched is because the locksmith and the dealership use different tools and resources to cut and program the key. What we recommend you do is shop around for prices between the two.

Some Jeep Grand Cherokees from the years 2008 to 2017 will have a smart key. The smart key can be cut and programmed by an automotive locksmith company or a Jeep dealership. Again, we recommend you check around for the best price between the two.

Spare key for Jeep Grand Cherokee
Where and how to make a spare key for a Jeep Grand Cherokee all depends on what type of a key your Grand Cherokee requires. Your Jeep Grand Cherokee will have one of four different types of keys. The four different types of keys are regular keys, transponder chip keys, key fobs and smart keys. For example:

A regular key, or what we like to call an old-fashioned key has no extra features and is just a regular metal key. These keys can be copied in many neighborhood hardware stores such as, Ace Hardware, The Home Depot, and even at Walmart. Your local locksmith shop will also be able to copy this key for you. Before you are heading on your way to make your key copy, call your neighborhood store to make sure they have the duplicating machine. Jeep Grand Cherokees that are from the years 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 will have this type of key.

Starting in the year 1999 all the way until 2017, most of the Jeep keys will be transponder keys, also known as chip keys. However, sometimes we still find that until the year 2003, a Jeep Grand Cherokee can still have just a regular key. An easy way to know the difference is by looking at the color of the key head. A regular key will have a black color whereas a transponder key will have a gray color. If you do have a transponder key and want to make a copy, a hardware store will not be able to help you. You will either need to call or go to an automotive locksmith or go to a Jeep dealership to cut and program a transponder key.

Jeep Grand Cherokees from the years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 have the transponder, (chip key), and these keys need to be programmed to your Jeep’s immobilizer. Although, between 1999 and 2003 you might have a key that does not need to be programmed. Remember, a good way to be able to tell if your transponder key has the invisible chip inside that needs to be programmed, just look at the key’s head color. A black color means it is not a transponder key, and a gray color means it does need to be programmed.

What does the transponder key do?

The transponder key has a hidden chip inside. This chip is programmed to your Jeep’s immobilizer and has a wireless connection between your key and Jeep. The immobilizer is a part of your Jeep’s security which is called an anti-theft system. In simple words, if your transponder key is not programmed to your Jeep’s immobilizer, the anti-theft system will block your gas pump. This means that you will be able to use the key to open the vehicle’s doors, turn the ignition switch and crank the engine, but the anti-theft system will not let the fuel get to the engine.
How to program a third key

(You must already have two working keys in order to program a third key).
1.Make sure you have two working keys with you and the third key you want to program already cut.
2.Insert your first old programmed key into the ignition and turn the ignition to the ON position. You will see all the dash lights come on. DO NOT start the engine.
3.Leave the key inside the ignition on the ON position for at least 3 seconds but no longer than 15 seconds.
4.Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
5.Repeat the same exact steps with the second old programmed key. After about 10 seconds, when the second key is still in the ON position, a chime will sound.
6.Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
7.Now you can insert the new key that has not been programmed and turn it to the ON position, but still do not start the vehicle.
8.After about 10 seconds, you will hear the chime sound.
9.Turn the ignition back to the OFF position and then turn it back to the ON position again for another 5 seconds.
10.Turn the ignition to the OFF position and remove the key.
11.Your new key has now been programmed.

You can program up to eight keys to your vehicle by repeating these steps.

Jeep Grand Cherokee key won’t turn in ignition
It is a common problem in Jeep Grand Cherokees that the ignition switch will not turn. The reason is is that these ignitions have a common problem with one of the wafers inside the ignition cylinder getting stuck. The best fix for this problem is to call a locksmith and have them re-key the ignition cylinder. Another problem that can cause the ignition to stop turning is a worn-out key. Making a key copy will not fix the problem. What we recommend is to have a locksmith company or Jeep dealership make you a new key either by your Jeep’s VIN number or by key code.
TIP: If your ignition switch is becoming harder and harder to turn or the key is getting stuck and it’s hard to pull it out, stop using this key. Call a locksmith or dealership and have them make you a new key. In many cases this will fix the problem.

Dodge neon key fob and programming

These fobs are inexpensive and usually cost anywhere from $20 to $40. You can buy them at a Dodge dealership, an automotive locksmith company, or online. It is very easy to program these fobs and should only take a few minutes to do. They always come with instructions on how to do it, however, if you have a problem with programming these remotes yourself, Mile High Locksmith will help you program the remote for free. You will just need to drive to us with your car and the new key fob.

Lost key for Dodge Neon

If you have lost your Dodge Neon key and have no spare, your car dealership or automotive locksmith will be able make you a replacement key. What the dealership or locksmith will do is make you a new key by your car’s VIN number or key code. The difference between the Dodge dealership and locksmith is that the dealership might not have your key information if you have an earlier model. A locksmith will have different tools and sources to get the key information.

Dodge dealer VS Automotive locksmiths

The difference between using a dealership and a locksmith is the type of service. You can go to the dealership or the locksmith, but in a case where you cannot drive your car, the locksmith will come to you. This will save you time and extra costs for towing your car.
Does auto insurance cover lost Dodge Neon keys and towing If you have full coverage with your auto insurance company, we recommend you check with your insurance company and see if you are covered for these two types of services.
Deductible and insurance premium. Most insurance companies will not raise your insurance premium or charge you a deductible if you are covered for roadside assistance. If you use a locksmith company or a Dodge dealership to make you a new key, make sure to keep the receipt for the insurance company.
Most insurance companies will cover anywhere from $50 to $150 for making you a new key, but only in the case if you lost the key.

How much does a Dodge Neon key cost?
The cost for a Dodge Neon key depends on a few factors. If you lost the key and have no spare, or if you do have a spare and you just want to make a duplicate key. The cost can also change by the type of the Dodge Key. Dodge keys have changed over the years. Below, is some information we would like to share with you about your Dodge key.
If your Dodge Neon is from the years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, or 1999, then your Dodge key is just a simple key and is very easy to make.
If your Dodge key is from the years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or 2006 then your key is a transponder key and besides cutting the key, it needs to be programed to your car’s immobilizer.
If you lost your Dodge Neon key and have a spare key, and are worried about someone finding it and stealing your car, there are a couple of solutions you have to change your key. If your Dodge is between 1994 and 1999, you can re-key your car locks. Some people will just re-key the car ignition switch or the car doors as a less expensive option. If your Dodge is between the years 2000 and 2006, you can even lower the cost by reprogramming a new key to your car.

Dodge Neon key won’t turn in ignition or is stuck
If your Dodge Neon key is starting to show signs of problems by turning hard, pulling out of the ignition harder, or it is stuck all together, the first thing we recommend you to do is to stop trying to use the key right away. What we first want to explain to you is what probably caused the problem. It can be one of two things. Either your key has worn out over years of use or one of the wafers in the ignition is stuck. Don’t think that making a copy of your key will fix the problem, because it won’t. You will either need to take your Dodge Neon to a dealership for them to make you a new key, or you can call an automotive locksmith to make you a new one. If one of the wafers in the ignition is stuck, it will need to be re-keyed. This can also be done at a Dodge dealership or by a locksmith.

Keys for Cadillac Deville have changed over the years. The keys start with just regular simple keys and change all the way until they are higher security system keys.
In the information below, we will explain what type of key, by the year, your Cadillac Deville has.
Cadillac key cutting
Cadillac Deville in the years 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989 have what we like to call, “an old fashioned,” metal key. These keys can be copied at many hardware stores such as Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or any locksmith company. Cadillac VATs keys lost
Cadillac Deville in the years 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 have a VAT key system installed. If you have lost the key or just need a copy you will have to call a locksmith company. Besides cutting the key, the locksmith will need to find which VAT key number you have. It can be anywhere between 1-16 VAT key numbers. Even when the keys look the same, the VAT number on the key can be different.
Cadillac chip key

Cadillac Deville in the years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 have a transponder key. The transponder key has a hidden chip inside the key head which has a wireless connection with your car’s immobilizer. Besides cutting this key, it will need to be programmed to the car. If you have a transponder key already cut and you are trying to start the car but it will not start, even when the engine is cranking, most likely the chip inside the key is not programmed or has just gone bad. A locksmith company or Cadillac dealership can program the key for you.

Honda CRV replacement key cost
The cost for making a new key for your Honda CRV can change depending on three different questions. These three questions are:

What year is your Honda CRV?

Did you lose all the keys and need a new key made?

Do you have a working key and just need a spare one made?

Honda CRV key information by a year:

If your Honda CRV is from the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 or 2001, you can have two different kinds of keys. You can have a regular key, a key with no features, or a transponder key. These keys can look alike. The differences between them is that the transponder key has a hidden chip inside the key head and these keys need to be cut and programed to your car immobilizer.

Honda CRV keys in the years 2001 and up to 2013 have the hidden chip inside and these keys will need to be programmed to your car.

Honda CRV keys in the years 2002, 2003, and 2004 require a transponder key with no other features. In these years, you can have a separate push button remote fob programed to your car.

Honda CRVs in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 can have two different types of keys. A standard High Security transponder key, or a High Security Transponder key including a remote fob, (push buttons on the key head).

Honda CRV key fob programming
If you lost your Honda CRV key and your car key needs to be programed, don’t worry. Mile High Lock and Key LLC has a service van with all the key blanks, key machines, and key programing machines to provide you with a working key wherever your car is located.

Honda CRV key won’t turn or open the door
If your key won’t turn or open the door it can be because of two different reasons. Either the key has worn out or one of the wafers has gotten stuck. Making a copy of the worn-out key, if this is the problem, will not help fix the problem. We will need to come to you and make a brand-new key using the VIN number, or we can get the key information by disassembling one of the locks, such as the ignition lock, trunk lock, door lock or glove box lock, on your Honda and getting the key code that is stamped on it. This is possible to do with every year of a Honda CRV. If one of the wafers is stuck on the ignition lock or door lock, we will have to disassemble the lock and re-key it to fix the problem.

Key replacement for Pontiac Sunbird or Pontiac Sunfire

GM vats key replacement

To get the key code for your Pontiac Sunbird or your Pontiac Sunfire, you will most likely need to remove the steering wheel and remove the ignition lock. The reason is because in most Pontiac vehicles the key code is stamped on the ignition lock, or this is where most of the key information is. For more information on your specific car, please continue reading below.

This key should work on the ignition lock, doors, trunk and glove box locks.

If for some reason you have two different keys for your Sunbird or Sunfire, such as one key to the ignition and one to the door locks, then from our experience most likely at some point in time the ignition lock had been changed. If this is the case, it will be more work and more difficult to get the two keys for your car.

How to get a key made for a Pontiac
If you are not making the key yourself and are using a locksmith company, the locksmith will need to disassemble the ignition lock and make a key for it. They will then also need to disassemble the door lock and make a key for that.
Here are the 2 basic tools and ways that we would use to get a key for your car:

The first way to try is by using the GM tryout key set. Usually the tryout master key is the first option and the easiest way to get the key information. It works by trying different keys from the master key set and when we find the right key, we just copy it. This usually works about 80% of the time.

The second way to try is by removing the steering wheel column. You will need the right tools for this when doing it yourself. This will not be an easy job to do and we do not recommend you do it yourself, unless you have no other option. The best way to do this is by using a locksmith company.
If you still want or need to do it yourself, here is the information you will need:
You will need the tool to remove the steering wheel. You can find this tool at any auto parts store, such as AutoZone, Pep Boys, or Checker Auto Parts. AutoZone is a great place to get this tool and instructions on how to do it. After you get the ignition out, you will either see the key code or the wafers to be able to get your key code information.

Where to buy a Pontiac key blank
(Our recommended websites)
Keylessride, Ebay, Amazon, Ace Hardware
or any locksmith store

Pontiac Sunbird key replacement
If your Pontiac Sunbird is in the years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, or 1994, most chances are that the key code is stamped on the ignition. Your key cuts are the same for the ignition lock, door lock, and the trunk lock. If you can disassemble one of these locks and get it to a locksmith store, you get can get the key this way. You will also be able to read the key code from the ignition or read the wafers from the other locks.

If your Pontiac Sunfire is from the year 2005, most likely the key code is stamped on the lock ignition and you can get the key information that way. For a Pontiac Sunfire in the years 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, there is no key code on the locks and you will have to read the lock wafers to get the key cut information. Either way, only the ignition has all the information for the key. This means you will not be able to make a key from the door, trunk, or glove box locks.

Key won’t turn in ignition
If your key will not turn in your ignition there are only two reasons why this is happening. Either your key is worn out or one of the wafers in the ignition is stuck. If your key is worn out, making a key copy will not help.

  • You will need to make a brand-new key with the key code.
  • If one of the ignition wafers is stuck, you will need to re-key the ignition.

Mile High Lock and Key knows how frustrating and scary it can be to lose your key or to have a problem with it. Toyota Echo key won’t turn

When your Toyota Echo Key is having trouble with the ignition, such as the key won’t turn, it can be caused from a couple of different problems. The first thing our technician will check is the actual key cut. The key cut can actually be worn out and still open your car doors, even if it does not work when you try to start the car.

  • We will not copy your key. We will just make you a new key using the VIN number to see if this fixes the problem.
  • The second reason why your Toyota Echo key won’t turn, may be caused by your ignition cylinder. Before replacing the whole cylinder, we will recommend trying to rekey the ignition cylinder.

One point we want to make is, even if we have to try one method first and it doesn’t work, we will only charge you for whichever fixes problem.

If your Toyota Echo is in the years 2000, 2001, and 2002, then the key is just a regular key and has no special features. This is just a old fashioned metal key that will not need to be programed to your car. If your Toyota Echo is in the years 2004, 2005, and 2006 then you have a transponder dealer key. This means your key has extra features to it and will need to be programmed to your car. Mile High Lock and Key LLC will send you a service van full of all necessary tools and equipment needed to program any one of these keys for you. Just give us a call and we will be on our way.

Hyundai Santa Fe key

key Replacement

Hyundai Santa Fe key replacement

The Hyundai Santa Fe key is very simple and basic key. They have no extra features, and are what we like to call an, “old fashioned” key. These keys are also easy to make and cheap. Your key allows you to open your door locks, trunk lock, glove box lock, as well as the ignition switch. If for some reason, you have two separate keys, one for the ignition and one for the doors, from our experience this means your ignition cylinder has been changed.

Hyundai Santa Fe key won’t turn in ignition

If for some reason your key has stopped turning the ignition switch and you don’t know what is wrong, we can help. There can be two different reasons why the key will not turn in the ignition. Since there can be only two reasons why your key has stopped turning in the ignition, we might have to try both ways to fix the problem. If we try one way first and it doesn’t work, but the second one works, we will not charge you for the work we did the first time to fix the ignition problem.

  • First fix: We will make you a new key by your car’s VIN number or key code.
  • Second fix: We will re-key your ignition switch.

Hyundai Santa Fe lost key
If your Hyundai Santa Fe is from the years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, then your key is just a simple key and we can make you knew key two different ways. The first way is by the car’s VIN number and the second way is by disassembling your trunk lock and getting the key information from there. These keys are inexpensive to make as long as your Hyundai Santa Fe has one key that operates all the locks. If for some reason the ignition and door key are different, from our experience it means your ignition lock has been changed. This means that we will not be able to get the key information from the car VIN number or the truck lock. We will have to disassemble the ignition lock and get the information from there. This will make it more difficult and expensive to get a new key.

Ford Escape Keys

key replacement

Ford Escape keys can be costly to replace just because of the key fob blank. If you have lost your key fob and don’t have a spare one, you can keep the cost low by having a new regular transponder key programmed to your Ford Escape without the push button features, (fob).

Ford Escape key fob
Most Ford Escapes from 2011 and up are already sold with a key fob, or (push buttons key). A key fob is a key blade that has push buttons on the head of the key for unlocking and locking the car doors. For a Ford Escape from the years 2011 and up, you can either program a new fob key or program just a regular transponder key. A transponder key is a key that does not have the buttons to unlock and lock the car. The reason we mention the fob key versus the transponder key is because there is a difference in pricing.

The difference between the prices are:

  • A fob key blank costs $89.95
  • A regular transponder key costs $19.95

These prices are just for the key blank and do not include cutting the key and programming it to your car.

Ford Escape key fob programming

There is basically no way to program a second key fob to your Ford Escape without using a programming key machine. Your Ford dealership or a locksmith company will be able to do this for you. If you need a second key made for your Ford Escape we recommend you shop around for prices between the dealership and different locksmith companies.
